Chapter Two

“Let’s call this meeting to order,” said Morgan as the girls all chattered away as usual. Their wet raincoats were piled up at the front of the bus, and the insides of the windows were already steamed up from all the moisture. Morgan had turned on the little heater as well as the strings of colorful lights that she’d gotten at the gift show last summer, but even this didn’t seem to be lifting her spirits. Emily, the secretary, went over the minutes of their last meeting, which, as usual, took just a couple of minutes. Then Amy said she had an announcement.

“Miss McPhearson has invited us to her house for a post-Thanksgiving tea,” said Amy with her usual authority. “She’d like us to join her at three o’clock on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. Does that work for everyone?”

“Not me,” said Chelsea. “Our family is going on a ski trip for Thanksgiving. I’ll be gone until Sunday.”

“Lucky duck,” said Amy.

“That’s not all,” said Chelsea. “I just found out that my dad got me a really great new snowboard. He was going to save it till Christmas, but Mom said that he’ll probably let me have it early and —”

“You know how to snowboard?” asked Carlie.

“Mostly I know how to ski,” said Chelsea. “But my brother promised to teach me, and he’s a really good rider.”

“What’s a rider?” asked Carlie.

“A snowboarder, silly,” said Chelsea. “You didn’t know that?”

“Maybe …” Carlie shrugged. “I guess I might’ve forgot or something.”

“Well, speaking of skiing and snowboarding,” said Emily. “Morgan was going to tell —”

“Wait a minute,” yelled Amy. “I’m not done with my business yet. I need to know who can go to Miss McPhearson’s house for tea.” She glared at the girls. “Hands, please.”

Morgan, Carlie, and Emily raised their hands.

“Thank you.” Amy pushed a strand of black hair away from her eyes. “I will let Miss McPhearson know ASAP.”

“Okay,” said Emily, “Morgan wanted to —”

“Wait a minute,” demanded Amy again. “You haven’t asked for the treasurer’s report.”

“Oh, yeah,” said Emily. She rolled her eyes. “I’m sure it’s changed a lot since last week.”

“It’s proper procedure,” said Amy. Then she read the amount in the treasury fund and frowned. “I was thinking we should either start having dues or do something to earn money.”

“Why?” asked Emily.

“In case something comes up,” said Amy. “Like when we did the park project. It would’ve helped us to get started if we’d had a little more cash on hand.”

“But it worked out,” said Carlie.

“I know,” said Amy. “But as a responsible treasurer, I feel it’s my duty to encourage our club to be financially fiscal.”

“Financially fiscal?” Morgan frowned at Amy. “What do you mean? We’re not a business.”

“We’re sort of like a business.”

“Oh, Amy,” said Chelsea. “Give it a rest, will ya?”

“Yeah,” agreed Emily. “Now Morgan has something to tell us.” Emily turned and looked at Morgan.

“Oh, I don’t know …” Morgan wasn’t sure she wanted to make her announcement now.

“What’s wrong?” asked Emily. “I thought you were going to invite everyone —”

“I don’t know if it’s such a good idea now.
